In Science, Year 6 explored how lightning occurs. We learned that during storms, particles inside clouds collide and build up static electricity. When the charge becomes too strong, it is released as a giant spark — lightning. To understand this better, we carried out a mini experiment using a balloon, a silver spoon, and friction from wool or our hair. By rubbing the balloon to create static electricity and bringing it close to the spoon, we observed a small spark. This helped us see that lightning is a large-scale version of static electricity.
