We all know the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but have you ever wondered how some of the porridge was too hot, while some was too cold? It was made altogether, no? So how can they be different temperatures? Well, in Year 5 Science this week, we think we have discovered that it was all to do with the materials used for the bowls. We were investigating the properties of different insulating materials and found that foil is not as good as newspaper or cotton when it comes to keeping porridge warmer for longer.
We noticed that foil is a conductor of heat, therefore takes the heat away from the porridge, whereas paper and cotton are insulators so they don’t let the heat escape quite so much.
