St Joseph - our Patron Saint

St Joseph was the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. The Gospels tell us very little about him, and he never speaks a single word in them. Yet what they tell us says a great deal: he was a “just man” (Matthew 1:19) who listened carefully for God's voice and acted on it with courage and trust. When God asked him to take Mary as his wife, to protect his family on the road to Bethlehem and to flee with them into Egypt, Joseph did not hesitate. He quietly got on with the work of loving, protecting and providing for the Holy Family, and in his carpenter's workshop in Nazareth he taught Jesus a trade and showed him what it means to work hard and do things well.
At St Joseph's, we always try to be the best version of ourselves, and our patron shows us what this really looks like. He reminds our children that you do not need to be loud or famous to be great in God's eyes: faithfulness, kindness and doing the right thing, even when it is hard, matter most. His example lives in our school values. He had deep faith in God's plan, compassion for those in his care, and a strong sense of responsibility for his family. He was a humble member of his community, respected by those around him, and he showed that real aspiration means saying “yes” to what God asks of us. Just as Joseph watched over Jesus as he grew, we see it as our calling to watch over, nurture and encourage every child entrusted to us, so that each of them can become the person God created them to be.
We are blessed that our school sits right next door to St Joseph's Church, and our two communities share not just a name but a way of life. Our children attend Mass every week, where they read, serve and pray alongside parishioners, and they celebrate the great feasts of the Church year together with the parish. Father Kenneth is a much-loved and familiar face in our school, and we value our warm relationship with him and with the parish community, who support and pray for our children. This close bond between home, school and parish helps our children to understand that faith is not only something we learn about, but something we belong to and live out together.
Learning from St Joseph, we will continue to:

  • Listen for God's voice in prayer, in Scripture and in one another, and have the courage to act on it;
  • Care for and protect each other, especially the youngest and most vulnerable in our community;
  • Cork hard and take pride in doing our best, just as Joseph did in his workshop;
  • Celcome everyone, as Joseph welcomed Jesus into his family;
  • Serve quietly and humbly, without needing thanks or praise;
  • Grow together with our parish family at St Joseph's Church;
  • Always try to be the best version of ourselves.

Each year we celebrate our patron on his feast day, 19 March, and remember him again on 1 May as St Joseph the Worker. On these days, and throughout the year, we ask for his prayers:

St Joseph, guardian of Jesus and protector of the Holy Family, watch over our school. Help us to listen to God as you did, to work hard, to care for one another and to follow Jesus with faithful hearts. Amen.
