Our new core text in Year 5 is Street Child, by Berlie Doherty.  We have just read a chapter called The Shilling Pie, in which our main character, Jim Jarvis, has bought a pie for his family with the last of their money.  Set in Victorian England, it tells the story of his struggle, and life in a Victorian Workhouse.  The children in Year 5 enjoyed having an ACTUAL PIE to hold, pretending to be Jim and his sisters as they try to keep warm in their house.  Sadly, the family has to move out because they can't afford the rent
