This week in maths, Year 1 have been learning about the part-whole model, exploring how a whole amount can be split into two parts, and how those two parts can be put back together to make the whole again. The children used counters to create their own part-whole models, and we also used actions and movements to help the idea stick, with the children physically showing "part" and "part" coming together to make a "whole." They got really involved, and it was lovely to see them using both their counters and their actions confidently to explain the model to each other. It's a brilliant foundation for their understanding of addition and subtraction going forward.
